The Problem With Comparisons

“Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” Peter seeing him said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?”
Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?
You follow Me!”
-John 21:20-22

I have a confession to make: Even though I know better I sometimes find myself
in a place (a moment of weakness)
where I am comparing myself against someone else.
The result is always the same: I find myself immediately robbed of joy.
Whatever, rather whoever, causes me-or maybe you-
to make such comparisons certainly doesn’t reside in the heavenlies,
but exactly the opposite.
He’s the one who came to rob, steal, and destroy., the accuser of the brethren.
Consider: When Jesus faced the devil at the end of His 40 days of fasting,
He rebuked satan not with His own authority (although He could have)
He used the power of God’s Word.
The scriptures tell us that “the joy of the Lord is our strength”, Neh.8:8-2.
Psalm 139 also proclaims that “we are fearfully and wonderfully made”,
so I do likewise, reminding myself of these very things, declaring God’s Word over myself.
Jesus has a good plan for our lives-it starts and ends with following Him.
The measure of a man or woman, what you’re true value is,
has absolutely nothing to do with comparisons against anyone else.
It has everything to do with the inestimable value God,
our Father in Heaven, places on each of us-
as evidenced by the fact that He paid the highest price for each of us.
You probably know this already, but has it become just a cliché fact or do you really get it?
God the Father loved you that much…and me…and all of us…
that He gave His only Son so we could have abundant life eternally!
Live life worthy of your calling, beloved, not wasting time on worthless comparisons, but
following in the Savior’s footsteps.
